Innovation and Philanthropy Combine for Big Change

MFG Archive

In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, Kathy Calvin, President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation, discusses how innovation and technology allows anyone to be a philanthropist.

With #GivingTuesday now in its fourth year, Kathy Calvin explains that the world of philanthropy is shifting and, with the help of innovation, big change is occurring. Growth in digital communication and technology allows for anyone to become involved in an issue or a cause they believe in. In Calvin’s words, “Philanthropy is being democratized.”

The United Nations Foundation was at the forefront of #GivingTuesday in 2012, with the goal of initiating a bottom-up movement that encourages people to give back, through a donation, volunteering, or using social media to spread awareness. With the belief that anyone can make a difference, the United Nation Foundation is excited that this shift in innovation and philanthropy is seeing results.

This new age of global philanthropists, “want to be deeply engaged, learning around the issues and donating their time, ideas, and voices to help the UN save and change lives.”

The global success of #GivingTuesday is just one example of how drastically the philanthropic sector can see change when it embraces innovation. As technology and digital communication continue to develop, “we can go further and faster to build a better world.”
